Emergency Contraception
Sometimes, after unprotected intercourse, whether intentional or due to a condom slipping off or breaking, the question arises of an effective treatment to prevent an unwanted pregnancy from the outset.
For some time now, the so-called “morning-after pill” has been available over the counter in Austria. Two preparations are accessible: Vikela® (active ingredient Levonorgestrel; to be used within 72 hours) and EllaOne® (active ingredient Ulipristal acetate; to be used within 120 hours). Both substances are generally reliable, although they have the drawback of being ineffective if ovulation has already occurred. The success rate is reported in the literature as 95%.
Alternatively, there are:
- The copper or gold IUD, and
- The abortion pill Mifegyne®
Both the copper or gold IUD and the abortion pill Mifepristone are extremely reliable! Studies have shown that use within 120 hours (5 days) achieves a success rate of 99%. After more than 120 hours, both methods are still highly effective, though there are no reliable figures available for this extended period.
An advantage of the IUD is that it can, of course, be left in place as a future contraceptive method!
If you have questions about this: don’t hesitate to call. Even on weekends or holidays. Every hour counts now!
