Statistically, almost every woman is confronted with an unplanned pregnancy at some point in her life. I see it as my medical duty to provide the support needed in this difficult situation to help reach the right long-term outcome, whether that means carrying the pregnancy to term or having a pregnancy termination / abortion.
The interview in the video above was recorded on the occasion of a symposium held on January 17 at Vienna City Hall, where I was invited as a speaker. The topic of the symposium (here you can find the programme) was “50 Years of Non-Punishable Abortion – What Comes Next? Past, Present and Future of Reproductive Self-Determination in Austria”.
Many women want to know in advance what exactly to expect. The precise procedure depends on the chosen method and your individual situation. In general, the process consists of several steps:
In Austria, abortion is possible within the framework of the legal regulations. Important factors include the week of pregnancy, the medical situation and the chosen method.
Because calculating the week of pregnancy is very important for choosing the appropriate method, a medical appointment should be arranged as early as possible. This allows us to clarify which options are available in your situation.
If you are unsure how far the pregnancy has progressed, please contact us. The exact assessment takes place as part of the medical consultation and examination.
The cost of an abortion depends, among other things, on the method and the individual medical effort involved. More detailed information is available when arranging an appointment or during the personal consultation.
In certain situations, cost coverage by public bodies or support from private organisations may be possible. If this is relevant for you, please speak to us about it or obtain additional information from the responsible offices of the City of Vienna or online.
Further information can be found on our page about the costs of an abortion.
Prim. Dr. Michael Adam is a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics and has accompanied women in many different gynaecological situations for many years. His professional career includes work in hospitals, the founding of Geburtshaus Nussdorf and the management of the Semmelweis Women’s Clinic, Vienna’s largest obstetric hospital.
Especially when it comes to abortion, calm, respectful and medically sound support is particularly important. That is why we take time for your questions and explain the possible steps clearly.

No. Many women first need medical information in order to make a decision. During the consultation, you can ask your questions and receive information about the possible methods.
Yes. We treat your enquiry and your appointment confidentially and discreetly. Even your health insurance provider has no access to our data.
There is no general answer to this question. The suitable method depends, among other things, on the week of pregnancy, your health situation and your personal wishes. During the medical consultation, it will be clarified which method may be appropriate for you.
Yes, in principle, women from other federal states or from abroad can also contact our clinic in Vienna. It is important to get in touch in good time so that appointments and medical requirements can be clarified.
No medical referral and no prior examination by your gynaecologist are required.
As part of the abortion process, bleeding occurs and in about half of cases cramp-like symptoms may occur. A follow-up examination is important to make sure that everything is medically in order. If you experience stronger symptoms or feel uncertain, you should contact a doctor.
As an institute we believe that women should have free choice on how to proceed in case of an unwanted pregnancy. We support legislation which allows women to decide in favor of termination until the end of week 12 of their pregnancy.
